Refuge Journal 17

Feb 23 2018

We are thrilled to announce the arrival of co-founder Adriel Denae’s first single & video from her new album produced by Norah Jones, coming out this year through Refuge Foundation for the Arts. Courier Journal and USA Today shared the stunning video filmed and directed by Artists in Residence Oliver Franklin Anderson and Justus Poehls.  “Build a World” is now available on Spotify!

“This is such a thrill and honor. This song surfaced in me like a meditation and a prayer. It was my wish for a world that I longed to live in and a way for me to build it. I envisioned a place I’d want to raise a child in and a set of ideas I could anchor to that wouldn’t fail me. In a rare way, it came out in one piece – late one night, while I sat at my piano – without much striving or thinking. It felt kind of like finding a map that directed me towards something true – which was love. I found out I was pregnant with my son a few weeks later. I often think of this as the first gift he gave me.”
