On May 17th, Emerging Artists Fox Valley will be resident artists of Mud & Prints for Downtown Appleton’s Art on the Town! Art on the Town takes place in downtown Appleton every third Friday of the month, with May 17th’s theme being Celebrate Student Artists. The Emerging Artists Fox Valley will be showing some of their work as well as working on a mural to be auctioned off at their art show at The Draw on June 14th. Come out and celebrate Appleton’s arts downtown to explore and enjoy rhythm and music, performing arts, visual arts, and more!
Refuge Arts is proud to begin partnership with Emerging Artists Fox Valley. The group began at a 2015 gallery show in Kaukauna where River & Bay magazine was interviewing Appleton photographer and printer, Mark Ferrell. The interviewer shared that she was working with a student in danger of not graduating, so Ferrell suggested she bring the student to the gallery. The student brought two friends who were also artists to show Ferrell their work, continued to return to him for guidance, and later installed an Emerging Artists display in the show. Creator of The Draw John Adams later gave Ferrell a key to The Draw so that he could continue to work with the group from January 2017 until they graduated high school in June.
Shortly after the group dissolved, the Director of Fine Arts for the Appleton Area School District asked Farrell if a student could get involved in his summer program. He didn’t have an established program at the time, so he decided to put one together. He then met Oshkosh-based artist Leif Larson who was already tutoring young kids in art, brought him on board, and Emerging Artists Fox Valley took off. The group continues to meet weekly at The Draw for an hour or two to provide guidance to students while growing their craft.
