Guitars for Vets is an organization that provides veterans with guitars and a forum to learn how to play, using the healing power of music to help cope with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
The organization began in 2007 when Milwaukee guitar instructor, Patrick Nettesheim, met Vietnam-era Marine, Dan Van Buskirk. Van Buskirk wanted to learn guitar for a long time but felt that his PTSD would prevent it from happening. After Nettesheim and Van Buskirt worked together for just a few months, the two realized that the guitar lessons were opportunities for self-expression, positive human interaction, and healing. They shared these findings with Veterans at The Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, and Guitars for Vets was born.
Guitars for Vets has arranged over 30,000 lessons and distributed over 3,000 guitars at no cost to military veterans. They share that more soldiers have committed suicide since the Vietnam War than have died in actual battle. Many are finding hope behind a guitar, using the healing power of music to cope.
Refuge Foundation for the Arts is proud to partner with Guitars for Vets through songwriting workshops with multiple artists.
